It's a traffic sign missing from Kenya's traffic code but UAP Insurance has included it in Kenya's Insurance products by "Standing Up" for the Elderly. Now, the elderly have a reputable Health Insurance provider to stand by them.
In a land not known to have a formal organized support system for the elderly, other than the family support system, Business Entrepreneurs and Corporate Managers, are finding it hard to cope with the demands of handling the medical demands for the elderly. There's silent frustration, yet, they are duty-bound to give back what they received from their parents... values, ideals, education, love, hope... At times, it is challenging in urban settings, neighbours rarely know each other very well, these days. Its also costly living in an urban setting.
Also note that Insurance Agents are also not immune from the stress of telling their clients that "Mzee" or "Mama" cannot be covered. Yet "Mzee" and "Mama" are playing golf, walking, jogging, going on safari, flying a plane, riding a pikipiki , managing/overseeing a business, managing a shamba, in summary, they are active, healthy and not sedentary.

There is a social angle too. Not only have the elderly given to their families, but they have served their country and society, at large. Look at the achievements of those who in their hey-day contributed to the well-being of the economy, businesses, armed services, civil service, police, Mama Mboga, Baba Duka...
UAP Kenya offered a ray of hope, with the announcement, last week, that they would waive age limits on medical insurance, which was previously set at the age of 65 years. The press release must have "made heads turn", in a fairly conservative sector of the economy, as the joining age, for this product, is now 65 - 80 years.
We quote from the press release in the East African Standard;
UAP Insurance Head of Medical Isaac Nzyoka said in doing this, the company was filling a gap that has existed in Kenya since the advent of medical insurance.
It is also responding to rising demand from a section of the population that is keen to provide insurance for aging parents.
He said that UAP had also realised from research that aging parents were increasingly posing a burden for their working children and with the ability to comfortably take care of them waning with rising medical and living costs, the best option was insurance.
“Over the years we also received many enquiries and instead of resorting to traditional insurance guidelines, opted to get our underwriters to develop a solution that provides cover for aging parents, which either they or their children or guardians can fund,” he added.
So, UAP Kenya deserves a fresh bouquet of flowers for the joy you'll bring to many households.
